Lato elected Polish FA chairman

Grzegorz Lato, one of the outstanding players in Poland's football history, was voted chairman of the Polish Football Association (PZPN).

The 58-year-old former winger won the election in the first round, claiming a majority 57 of the 113 votes ahead of fellow candidates, Zdzislaw Krecina and Zbigniew Boniek.

Beenhakker: We lost because of individual mistakes

- We were prepared for a difficult game because Slovakia are a really tough side. Unfortunately we didn’t play like we did on Saturday and most of the game was very open. We had our chances in the first half ale but didn’t take advantage of them. We lost the match because of our individual mistakes and we have to accept that. I congratulate our opponents on their victory – said the Poland head coach, Leo Beenhakker, at the press conference after the game with Slovakia.

The team’s next World Cup qualifier will be away against Northern Ireland, next spring on the 28th March.

Beenhakker: I am pround of my players

We showed once more that we can play. On top of that we played in a great stadium where we feel very good and in front of a terrific crowd. It all proves that we can show what we are capable of – said Poland head coach, Leo Beenhakker, during the press conference after the match against the Czech Republic.

Poland beat the Czech Republic 2:1 (HT 1:0) in their World Cup 2010 qualifying match, which was played in Chorzów. Goals: Paweł Brożek (27), Jakub Błaszczykowski (53) - Martin Fenin (87). Referee: Wolfgang Stark (Germany). Yellow cards: Dariusz Dudka (Poland), Radoslav Kovac (Czech Republic). Attendance: 50 000.

In their next World Cup 2010 qualifying match, Poland take on Slovakia in Bratislava (15 October, 20:30).
